1949 – Dale Leipper at Texas A&M |
1992 Virginia and Dale Leipper returned for a visit to TAMU Oceanography & Meteorology Department. The tall building in the background is the Department building |
Dr. Dale F. Leipper was the founding head of the department of Oceanography & Meteorology at Texas A&M in College Station Texas. The department started with 5 staff appointments and by 1963 it had expanded to 154 people. The unique concept of an oceanography department based at a landlocked college has an interesting history. In short it had to do with oysters dying on the Louisiana Coast and the oil industry seeking a cause and solution for the problem. After leaving Texas A&M in 1968, Dr Leipper went on to become the first head of the oceanography and meteorology department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA
